Irish Eye Records is pleased to present "The Rats and the Rosary," volume two of Michael Snow's "Skelly" trilogy, and exploration of music inspired by his Liverpool / Irish background. Returning from volume one (Here Comes The Skelly), Pat McInerney and Ron DeLa Vega (rhythm section of Nanci Grifith's Blue Moon Orchestra), fiddle master Craig Duncan and whistle wizard John Mock, are joined by guests including Fran Breen (Waterboys), Clive Gregson, legendary sessionman Larry Knechtel on a co-written piano feature, Bill Lloyd (Foster & Lloyd etc.), Dennis Locorriere (of Dr. Hook fame), Strawbs lead guitarist Brian Willoughby, who also contributed three co-writes, and his duo partner, Cathryn Craig. |

British folk rock
with a heavy traditional presence in instrumentation and style. Twelve
original songs, several memorable, ranging in style from Merseybeat to
Jiggy to just a little bit country, showcase Snow's varied influences...a
worthy effort. January, 2002 "A
distinct Irish influence, both in melody and subject material. Snow's
years of work as a sideman and writer of pop and country music shows up
in his catchy melodies and solid, well-crafted song structure" Beg, steal, borrow
or (preferably) buy this album. From its extremely attention-getting title
to the final intriguing track, this is a treasure. Michael Snow has one
of the longer pedigrees that I have encountered since beginning my reviewing.
His Liverpool Irish origins shine through in this selection of self-penned
(sometimes in collaboration) songs. "Finely crafted
songs with a slight Irish touch, covering a broad range of musical influences,
from singer/songwriter to folksy pop and rockier ground. A determined
journey...I'm sure part III of the Skelly Trilogy is coming soon." November, 2001: An excerpted review from the November '01 issue of Folk Roots Magazine regarding Michael's "The Rats and the Rosary" (Michael Snow, Irish Eye Records IYE 944) "On
rip-roaring ballads and positive folk-rock outing, he sounds confidently
assured...contagious, lodges within the memory bank easily...musically,
the punch is solid and well ordered, with Snow's multi-instrumental abilities
out front; and a choice backing outfit, including Brian Willoughby, Clive
Gregson, and Dennis Locorriere, adds extra weight. A collection of story
songs, refreshingly devoid of sentimentality. |
